Punch & Judy
Rod Burnett has been a performer of Punch & Judy since 1977.
After completing a degree in Sculpture, he obtained 1st class hons and went on to hold the Fellowship in Sculpture at Exeter Art College where he continued to teach for a number of years. It was at this time he became interested in Puppetry and started to build and perform Punch and Judy
.
Initially it was an exercise in exploring the tradition of puppetry in the UK but as with all performers of Punch he became absorbed by the show, its history, performance, theatricality and the magical fascination by its audience.
As demand for the show at parties, festivals, shopping centres, theatres and fetes grew Rod left teaching. He worked the beaches and holiday camps in the Summer months at Dawlish Warren, Teignmouth , Burnham on Sea and eventually became the Weston super Mare Punch & Judy Man. He was also well known for performing through the summer months at Bristol Zoo.
The success of Storybox Theatre productions meant that the number of Punch & Judy Shows Rod could perform in a year had to be cut down. So these days he still makes performances in this country (watch out and you might catch one at a festival or craft market somewhere!) but most of the performances are at International Puppetry Festivals. He is regarded as one of the leading exponents of the art of Punch & Judy with his show steeped in the traditions of Commedia Del Arte and performed with hilarious, irreverent and sometimes shocking black humour.
