The Snow Queen

 - Reviews

ReviewsTHE STAR PHOENIX, CANADA - The physical magic of the show lies in clever puppetry and some lovely special effects.
The real-life magic comes from the performer, who conviningly portays the characters, and fluidly tells a complex story.

The Edmonton Journal, Canada - Every once in a while you run across a charismatic storyteller who knows exactly how conversational to be, how friendly, how dramatic, how quiet. Such a person is Rod Burnett from England's Storybox Theatre, who's brought 2 shows to the Kids' Fest. One is the Snow Queen, his version of Hans Christian Andersen's dark, bizarre tale about an enchanted land where memory and hearts are frozen, time stops, and love is buried in the permafrost.
Burnett, a sculptor by trade, leads the littlest kids through this murky magic labyrinth in a gently ingenious way using puppets, lights, simple musical effects, and acknowledging his audience at every turn. He's at pains to include the adults, too, with wry asides. He conjures a whole kingdom of dreams by refracting objects through the translucent skin of a tambourine. It's a masterly, well-judged turn.
